Co-Winner of 2022 Junior Scholar Best Essay Prize of Queer African Studies Association

“The Politics of 'Queer Reading' an Ethiopian Saint and Discovering Precolonial Queer Africans," an essay published in the Journal of African Cultural Studies co-won the 2022 Best Essay award for Junior Scholars by the QASA/ASA. The essay has been recognized as such at the #ASA2023, held in San Francisco. The author Debele’s work was acknowledged for its theoretical and political significance and contributions for the field of Queer African Studies. This recognition underscores the vital role of African scholars in shaping academic conversations and debates as well as in reconfiguring African Studies, a field notorious for marginalizing African voices.
